Area Forecast Discussion For Western SD and Northeastern WY
National Weather Service Rapid City SD
442 AM MDT Sat Jul 26 2025

.KEY MESSAGES...

- Marginal to slight risk (level 1 to 2 of 5) for severe storms
this afternoon and evening across much of western SD

- Heat indices will exceed 100F across south central SD today
  through Monday

- Chances for storms return next week as temperatures cool off

.DISCUSSION...(Today Through Friday)
Issued at 412 AM MDT Sat Jul 26 2025

500mb analysis shows trough over CA with broad ridging over the
eastern CONUS. The Northern Plains sits under near zonal west-
southwesterly flow. Satellite imagery shows ongoing MCS associated
with weak shortwave trough over eastern ND. Current obs show a
west-east oriented sfc boundary across the SD/ND border with some
light radar returns popping up over far northern SD. Otherwise,
the skies over the CWA are mostly clear with light sfc winds and
temps in the upper 60s to 70s.

Unsettled southwest flow will continue across the Northern Plains
through today with embedded shortwave affecting the region by
this afternoon. At the sfc, lee trof will set up across western SD
with southerly flow and WAA supporting temperatures in the mid to
upper 90s by this afternoon. Heat indices will climb to above 100
across much of central SD. Have expanded the heat advisory
northward to include Ziebach, Haakon, and Jackson Counties. Strong
theta-e advection will support moderate instability with SBCAPE
exceeding 3000 J/kg across northwestern SD by this afternoon.
Could see convection developing over the Black Hills early in the
afternoon with widerspread convection developing across
northeastern WY into western SD as the shortwave approaches and
large-scale ascent overspreads the region. Deep layer shear of
30-40kt will be enough to support organized convection. CAMs have
been fairly consistent in initially semi-discrete storms moving
over northeastern WY before transitioning into an MCS and moving
across northwestern SD this evening. Main concerns with the more
discrete cells earlier in the afternoon will be large hail with a
wind threat developing later on as the MCS develops.

We`ll see a break from the storms on Sunday as the upper ridge
over the southeastern US strengthens and modest height rises move
over the CWA. The heat, however, is a different story as highs
climb into the 90s to low 100s once again. It`s very likely there
will need to be a heat headline out for south central SD for
Sunday afternoon and Monday as the southeastern US ridge axis
retrogrades further west.

Strong cold front pushes through late Monday into Tuesday,
cooling temperatures down significantly (highs for Wednesday
progged to be in the 70s). Strengthening flow aloft will support
deep layer shear of 40-50kt, coupled with moderately buoyant
airmass in the warm sector of a developing sfc low over western
SD, we could see more severe weather on Monday afternoon. The CWA
will sit on the northern edge of the strengthening ridge through
the mid week as an upper level trough over Canada strengthens.
This will promote continued unsettled flow over the CWA through
the mid week as shortwaves move around the periphery of the ridge.

&&

.AVIATION...(For the 12Z TAFS Through 12Z Sunday Morning)
Issued At 439 AM MDT Sat Jul 26 2025

Isolated to scattered thunderstorms will develop across
northeastern WY this afternoon and move into northwestern SD by
this evening. Some storms could be strong to severe with large
hail and damaging winds as the primary hazards. LCL MVFR
conditions may be encountered near any storms. Storms could also
develop across the western SD plains and around the Black Hills,
though confidence is too low to put mention in KRAP TAF at this
time. Outside of the storms, VFR conditions expected to prevail.
